The Chemistry Advanced Laboratory (CAL) was established to accelerate the development of innovative technologies by application of the principles of chemical sciences to add value to natural resources prevalent in Nigeria. Chemical processing and the production of a variety of materials in the laboratory play a significant role both in the chemical industry and industries related to food, medicine, agriculture and petroleum. The Chemistry Advanced Laboratory also promotes collaborative studies with individuals, universities, research institutes and industry.

CAL brochure is available here in pdf format.

Research

The research and development focus of the laboratory includes:

Agricultural Chemistry: involving the production and application of urea based slow releasing nitrogen fertilizers.

Organic and Natural Product Chemistry: for the production of active compounds for treatment of epilepsy and other diseases, pesticides and animal repellants. Also involves the synthesis of biologically active and environmentally friendly substances.

Solid Mineral Processing: development of technologies for the extraction, purification and production of some raw materials such as sulphur, oxides and industrial grade talc.

Polymer Chemistry: Synthesis of chemically recyclable and biodegradable polymers that are environmentally friendly.

Analytical/Environmental Chemistry: detection and determination of organic and inorganic pollutants, speciation studies; development of pollution remediation techniques.

Inorganic Chemistry: preparation of new inorganic and biocompatible materials.

Recent achievements of the Chemistry Advanced Laboratory include urea fertilizer modification and multiplication as well as the production of industrial grad talc from local Nigerian ore deposits. Read about them here.
