The Biotechnology Advanced Laboratory (BAL) aims to provide a centre of excellence for research and training in various disciplines that come under the purview of biotechnology. The primary research and development activities undertaken are those that have direct relevance to the fields of medicine and healthcare, food and agriculture, industrial development, environmental protection and energy production. The objectives of the lab include:

The promotion of scientific activities that will lead to the development and peaceful application of biotechnology and genetic engineering.

Assisting in strengthening national scientific and technological capabilities in the field of biotechnology as well as maintaining close contact with industry.

Serving as a forum for the exchange of information, experience and know-how among scientists and technologists working in the field of biotechnology.
